Jason Miller has been inspired by the mismatched and imperfect. He tells a story with every piece he creates. Miller’s “Seconds” series features delicate china with some very unexpected designs adorning each piece. “Beautifully Broken” features a set of vases that have been broken and then restored. The restoration process does not attempt to hide the cracks, but rather celebrates the imperfections.
Smart Design, originator of the Oxo Good Grips products, is a company that designs items we use every day, yet rarely think about. Winner of several prestigious awards, this firm has come up with innovative concepts for a garlic press to a revolutionary interior to a taxicab. What sets this company apart is that it focuses not only on how to improve aesthetic designs, but also functionality.
John Maeda was recently appointed President of the Rhode Island School of Design. Both RISD and MIT, his former home, have influenced his work, which runs the gamut from computer design to a pair of very high-tech sneakers. Maeda’s most famous creation is the Reebok Timetanium - a revolutionary sneaker in Reebok’s line that works as an art piece as well as mere footwear.
