OVATION SIGNS BROADCAST LICENSING DEALS WITH ZODIAK RIGHTS TO BRING SUSAN BOYLE: HER SECRET STRUGGLE, BIG BALLET, AND SHOW ME THE MONET TO THE US FOR THE FIRST TIME

Cannes, France: Mip TV – April 7, 2014 – Ovation, America’s only arts network, has completed a broadcast licensing deal with Zodiak Rights for US premiere rights to the critically acclaimed documentary film Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle. In addition, Ovation has acquired US premiere rights to Big Ballet, and Show Me the Monet.

Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle (1 x 60’), an all-access, intimate and inspiring documentary, travels with Boyle as she embarks upon her first tour, struggles with her fears, and reveals her battles with Asperger’s Syndrome. The documentary is produced by Firecracker Films for ITV1 and will premiere on Ovation on April 9.

Ovation has also picked up the touching reality series, Big Ballet (3 x 60’) which has been a ratings hit on Channel 4 in the UK.  Produced by Rare Day, the series follows two maestros as they mentor a group of plus-sized dancers to make their dreams of performing in a professional ballet production come true.  Big Ballet makes its US debut on Ovation May 28.

Ovation has also secured Show Me the Monet (10 x 60’), a competition series where three uncompromising art experts scour the country for undiscovered talent and hand pick the very best art works for an exclusive Judges Exhibition. Everyday people submit their personal art works into the competition ranging from paintings and sculptures, to graffiti, photography, pottery, and more. These budding artists then face judgment to find out what their work is really worth when the buying public comes forward to make them an offer they may or may not be able to refuse. Show Me the Monet is a straight-talking look at what art is really worth, both to those who create it, and those who buy it. The series is produced by Lucky Day Productions.

Susan Boyle, Big Ballet, and Show Me the Monet are programs that fit squarely in our network’s wheelhouse of arts-focused content,” said Michelle Zajic, VP, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Ovation. “But they are also wonderfully emotional, uplifting, and exciting shows that show how the arts can inspire you to succeed beyond your wildest dreams. All three of these programs were ratings winners in the UK and we hope to duplicate that success in the US when they premiere on Ovation.”

Pam Bertino Promoted to SVP, Content Distribution;

Anup Thakkar Named Director, Business Development, Content Distribution

Santa Monica, CA – March 18, 2014 – After securing significant distribution gains early in the year, Ovation, America’s only arts network, is taking further steps to grow its content distribution team. Pam Bertino has been promoted to SVP, Content Distribution, and Anup Thakkar has been appointed to the newly created role of Director, Business Development, Content Distribution.

Bertino joined Ovation in 2012 as VP, National Accounts and Content Distribution. Since that time she has played a major role in Ovation’s distribution gains, including the network’s deal with AT&T U-verse for a recent HD launch, as well as launch deals with Hawaiian Telcom and RCN. As SVP, Content Distribution, she will continue to oversee national accounts, including DIRECTV, Dish, AT&T and Charter, as well as manage field sales and business development. Bertino reports to Brad Samuels, EVP, Content Distribution

As Director, Business Development, Content Distribution, Thakkar is responsible for maximizing distribution and subscriber revenue through direct account management and strategic support for the department’s key initiatives.  In addition to securing incremental distribution via MVPD accounts, he is also focused on maximizing international distribution, as well as digital distribution opportunities, including OTT SVOD and online syndication. Thakkar reports to Bertino.

“Pam deftly manages relationships with most of our largest distributors and has played a key role in developing Ovation’s overall strategy for maximizing distribution and revenue related to SD, HD, VOD and TV Everywhere platforms,” noted Samuels. “Her experience and knowledge of this ever-changing industry is a tremendous asset to our whole team.  And with the addition of Anup, to provide his extensive experience in business development and strategic planning, we are well positioned to take advantage of a variety of future distribution opportunities.”

Before joining Ovation, Bertino spent 15 years with The Weather Channel, leading the company’s linear and cross-platform distribution efforts. Prior to that, she was VP, Residential Sales at Digital Music Express (DMX) where she was responsible for the development of all strategic relationships for sales, marketing and new business development for the residential sales division of the company.

Thakkar joins Ovation from his own Thakkar Film Consulting firm where he provided business management services to companies such as Vdio.com, Millennium Entertainment, and Legend Group Studios. Previously, he was Finance Head/Controller at PANTELION (Joint Venture of LIONSGATE Entertainment & TELEVISA), responsible for preparing, consolidating and analyzing annual budgeting and long-range planning processes. Before joining LIONSGATE full time, Thakkar was a consultant to the company, among others, developing international product acquisition models and strategic business, annual operating and P&L plans for new and library titles.

One Hour Documentary Profiles the Scottish Singer and Her Battle to Overcome Private Challenges During Her First Concert Tour

Santa Monica, CA – March 12, 2014 – On Wednesday, April 9 at 10 p.m. ET, Ovation, America’s only arts network, will present the U.S. television premiere of Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle. This all-access, intimate and inspiring documentary travels with Boyle as she embarks upon her first tour and uncovers her battles with Asperger’s Syndrome.

In 2009, an unknown Scottish singer named Susan Boyle stunned audiences when she performed “I Dreamed a Dream” on the TV show Britain’s Got Talent.  Soon after, she released an album that debuted at number one and became a worldwide bestseller.  A true phenomenon with the voice of an angel, Boyle captured the hearts of audiences across the globe. Despite her fame, Boyle privately battled anxiety and avoided requests for live concert tours.  Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle goes behind the scenes to reveal the enigma that is Susan Boyle.

Last year, with the support of her team and requests from fans, Boyle decided to embark on her first-ever series of live solo concerts. This film follows the singer on a journey through the stress of rehearsal to the opening night in Scotland and on to a sold-out American concert in front of 20,000 fans. If all goes well, a world tour will follow.

“We are pleased to give our audience such a deep, personal glimpse into the private life of Susan Boyle,” said Scott Woodward, SVP, Programming and Production, Ovation. “Her struggles and triumphs are an inspiration to all. For anyone who’s ever been afraid to follow their dreams, this is a must-see special about battling through the obstacles to artistic success.”

Produced by Firecracker Films for ITV1 in the UK, and distributed internationally by Zodiak Rights, Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle will premiere in the U.S. on Wednesday, April 9 at 10 p.m. ET, only on Ovation.

Images, clips and screeners are available for press upon request.

OVATION ACQUIRES U.S. PREMIERE BROADCAST RIGHTS TO SLATE OF SERIES AND FILMS FROM BBC WORLDWIDE NORTH AMERICA

The Aristocrats, Unfinished Masterpieces, Sex and Sensibility: The Allure of Art Noveau,

A Very British Murder and Treasures of Ancient Egypt are Among the Titles Licensed

for Ovation’s “Morning Canvas” Block

Santa Monica, CA – March 13, 2014 – Ovation, America’s only arts network, has acquired U.S. premiere broadcast rights to several arts-focused series from BBC Worldwide North America Sales and Co-productions. The various series will air in Ovation’s new, daily programming block, “Morning Canvas.”  The announcement was made by Michelle Zajic, VP, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Ovation.

The deal was brokered by Melissa Green for BBC Worldwide North America and Michelle Zajic for Ovation. Among the series and films Ovation has licensed for “Morning Canvas” are:

  • Sex and Sensibility: The Allure of Art Nouveau (3 X 50’) – In the 1890s, Art Nouveau was an explosion of sexual, scandalous and revolutionary ways of depicting the world that swept rapidly from country to country, influencing the fine arts, interior design, jewelry, furniture and lighting.  The Art Nouveau movement embraced both new materials and technological innovations while expounding on lines and curves based on real-life figures. Filmed in London, Glasgow, Paris, Brussels and Vienna, this series documents this hugely influential movement that rose rapidly to prominence and fell just as quickly due to the start of WWI.

  • A Very British Murder (3 X 50’) – Literature’s fascination with the grisly details of the dark and despicable crime of murder is at the heart of this fascinating documentary series. Historian Lucy Worsley explores how British murders from the early 19th century became a staple of an astonishing range of entertainments. She explains how killings inspired authors such as Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, whose novels are still read the world over.

  • The Aristocrats (4 X 50’) – This fascinating four-part series follows some of the most famous society families in Britain and Europe – the Rothschilds, the Shaftesburys, the Marlboroughs of Blenheim and the March family of Goodwood – as they try to preserve their traditions and estates in the modern age.

  • Treasures of Ancient Egypt (3 X 50’) – In this epic, visually stunning adventure through Ancient Egypt, journalist and art critic Alastair Sooke tracks down the treasures of the longest-lasting civilization in history and uncovers the true story of their rise and fall through the ages.

  • Unfinished Masterpieces (1 X 50’) – Alastair Sooke explores the mysterious appeal of unfinished works of art. From Dickens’ unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Jane Austen’s Sanditon to Coleridge’s Kubla Khan, he talks to those who have attempted to finish these literary enigmas and those who believe that any such task is impossible.

“For ‘Morning Canvas’ we wanted to build a destination for first-class arts and culture documentaries and films. With this slate, we are off to a great start,” said Zajic.  “We can always rely on BBC Worldwide to deliver high-quality content that Ovation viewers love.”

“Our vast programming catalogue allowed us to curate an eclectic programming package of factual series tailored to the Ovation audience,” commented Matt Forde, EVP Sales and Co-Productions, BBC Worldwide North America.
