Anish Kapoor

The sculptures of Anish Kapoor range from site-specific small colorful mounds of pigments, to the enormous Cloud Gate at the Millennium Park in Chicago. Born in Mumbai (Bombay) in 1954, Kapoor moved to England in 1972. After studying at the Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Design, Kapoor came to prominence in the 1980s with works informed by his bridge between two cultures. Throughout his showings and installations, there is always a meditative quality to his sculptures. Kapoor has had solo exhibitions at the Tate, Kunsthalle Basel in Swizterland, Renia Sofia in Madrid, CAPC in Bordeaux, National Gallery in Ottawa, Musee des Arts Contemporains in Belguim, and Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Brazil, amongst others. His work is in on view in public collections including, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC; the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Prato, Italy; Musee St. Pierre in Lyon, France; and, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. At the Vencie Biennale he was awarded the Premio Duemila. Kappor is also a winner of the Turner Prize, and has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship at the London Institute, an Honorary Fellowship at the Royal Institute of British Architecture, and a CBE in 2003.
