Terrence Sanders

Terrence Sanders is a New Orleans based artist who is following in the tradition of American folk artists engaged in their communities. Born in Pineville, just north of New Orleans in 1970, Sanders' formal art education began as a guest in his ex-wife's art school classes. After a time in New York, where he became friends with Basquiat, Sanders returned to New Orleans, and founded a gallery - Sanders Smith and Stokes. His painting, photography, film, and poetry began to flourish. Sanders' work focuses on those without a voice and without representation in mainstream media. His paintings of sketched faces and hand-written words set in deep colors create a specific context, a visual story. In addition to his regular exhibitions in New Orleans, Sanders has shown his work in group exhibitions at B-Complex in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Museo do Trabalho in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
