Diana Krall
Diana Krall's voice and piano playing bring the jazz standards to life with her impeccable timing and expressive phrasing. She has succeeded in gaining the respect of boh jazz aficionados and mainstream pop audiences. Born in British Columbia, Canada in 1964, Krall grew up in a family that appreciated and played music all the time. She studied piano from a young age and listened to the extensive record collection of her piano-playing father. At 17, she played at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and won a scholarship to study music at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston. When she returned to Canada, bassist Ray Brown encouraged her career and continued to be an influence in her music. On his advice, Krall moved to Los Angeles, where she studied with pianist Jimmy Rowles. In 1990, she moved to New York and began playing with a trio in clubs. Her first album release Stepping Out (1993) was followed by Only Trust Your Heart (1995), and then a Nat King Cole tribute album titled All For You, which was nominated for a Grammy. It was her 1999 album When I look in Your Eyes that cemented Krall's jazz career, winning her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. She followed this with the multi-platinum The Look of Love (2001). In 2003, she married British musician Elvis Costello, who served as lyricist for her first album to include original material - 2004's The Girl in the Other Room. Diana Krall continues to tour and record, with her twin sons in tow.
