In this five-part program, British personality, composer and musician Howard Goodall reviews the history of music, making brief stops along the way to tell the story of individuals who achieved a seminal moment of music innovation a "big bang". In episode four Goodall travels to Italy and England as he discusses the invention of the piano at the end of the 17th century by Bartolomeo Cristofori. Visiting the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali in Rome, which houses one of Cristofori's original pianos, Goodall surveys the changes wrought by this invention, highlighting the immense contributions of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn.
