Midshipman Horatio Hornblower (Loan Gruffudd) joins the British fleet just as the French Revolution erupts and changes the course of history. When Hornblower stands up to fellow shipmate and bully Jack Simpson, a duel takes place. One of Hornblower's mates steps in and is killed, turning the men into enemies who are split onto separate ships. Eventually they encounter each other again and another duel ensues -- but this time Hornblower has to fight for himself.
