Toulouse Lautrec

Toulouse_160x120

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a contemporary of the great impressionists, but he documented Parisian nightlife in a highly individual style - striking a darker, more discordant note in the art of the last fin-de-siécle. By elevating the humble poster to the status of high art, his images of the dance halls, theatres, cafes and brothels of Paris remain as popular as they ever were, almost a century after their creation. This profile, marking the centenary of the death of Toulouse-Lautrec, gathers contributions from some of Europe's most important artists and art experts, and draws on photographic and film archives, and the recollections of his descendants and surviving relatives, to generate a strong sense of Toulouse-Lautrec's life, career and ideas.
