And Now Your 1998 Art Rewind…

TBT19981

1. Shakespeare in Love steals our hearts with its heart-breaking, cross-dressing romance, and Gwyneth steals the show at the Oscars with her giant pink dress. (Her dress may or may not have been the inspiration for our prom outfit the next year.)

2. Green Day’s alt-anthem “Good Riddance – Time of Your Life” is played at every prom and graduation…and continues to be played at every prom and graduation for the next decade.

3. Television bids a fond farewell to Seinfeld as it ends its decade-long run. The finale left some….less than satisfied with its look back at all the minor characters who had been wronged along the way. But the series lives on as one of the greatest comedy shows of all time.

4. Sex and the City premieres on HBO, introducing us to our new best friends and their amazing fashions (post-season-one fashions, that is.) What did we do before Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda, and Carrie asked boundary-pushing questions like the series opener: “can women have sex like men?” Ooooo – provocative!

5. Janet Jackson’s “Velvet Rope” tour burns through Europe, North America, Japan, New Zealand, Africa, and Australia. The tour’s closing date in Hawaii broke attendance records, and the live broadcast won multiple Emmys. (Ms. Jackson’s six-pack did not win any awards, but should have.)

6. Frank Sinatra dies at 82, leaving an incredible legacy of music and style. (Cue: “My Way.”)

7. The first book in J.K. Rowling’s epic Harry Potter series is introduced in the U.S. (with a slightly altered title). Everyone devours it, and one of the largest fandoms in history gets its start.
