Artist Jason deCaires Taylor has made a name for himself creating underwater sculptures that are not only beautiful, but also good for their ocean habitats. In his latest creation, Ocean Atlas, Taylor submerged a colossal image of a Bahamian girl acting as the mythical Atlas, who held up the world on his shoulders.
The cement figure is made from sustainable material that also enables coral growth. Part of Taylor’s purpose is to create artificial reefs that will ease the demand on nearby, over-touristed reefs.
Ocean Atlas was installed in the waters off Nassau, Bahamas. It weighs 60 tons, is over 18 feet tall, and is ready for visitors.
