About the show

Walk in artists’ footsteps (literally!) and visit the inspiration for the UK’s most loved landscape paintings. With unique access to treasures of the art museum Tate Britain, curator Gus Casley-Hayford and celebrity guests travel to the lush green countryside, gritty urban cityscapes, and wild romantic coasts that seduced these great artists.

Along for the ride, Gus is joined by some great guests:

  • Academy Award-nominee Richard E Grant demystifies “country boy” painter John Constable’s landscapes in Episode 1.

  • Miriam Margolyes goes on a voyage to visit the hometown of Alfred Wallis, a former fisherman who started to paint with no formal training, in Episode 2.

  • Singer, songwriter Cerys Matthews sees the breathtaking landscapes that inspired JMW Turner in Episode 3

  • Michael Sheen goes back to his native South Wales in the footsteps of artist Josef Herman in Episode 4.

  • Writer, journalist, and DJ Danny Baker traces satirist William Hogarth’s adventures on a gin-fueled romp in London in Episode 5.

  • Actor Simon Callow experiences the drunken, gamblin bonhomie that William Powell Frith painted 150 years ago in Episode 6.
